The "For Dummies" publishing empire seemed like a good idea at first. Let's face it, some things are just too complicated for our teeny little brains. I am thinking of helpful books like "Wiring your Digital Home for Dummies," "Baby Signing For Dummies," and "SQL Servers for Dummies" (whatever that means...SEE!) As an adult, we need to get our education delivered in small easily digestible chunks. We know that dummies is really a euphamism for people who don't have the money, the 1500 hours, and the iron gut it takes to learn everything there is to know about wine: Hence: Wine for Dummies.
But like so many things that are extended far beyond the realm of sensibility, it has long ago abandoned the very common sense that it proports to offer. Some things are just so basic to the human experience that there really shouldn't be any dummies in those areas. Sex For Dummies springs to mind. Parenting for Dummies is an equally distressing title. I mean, isn't the whole problem that too many stupid people are reproducing. Why help them?
Other areas are so high-brow that the prerequisites for even wanting the book would preclude dummies. Law School for Dummies, is one example. It's like Running NASA for Dummies. If you're smart enough to get into law school, then you ain't no dummy. Law School for Assholes would be infiniately more helpful. Law School For Sensitive Intellectuals even more so.
The Bible for Dummies, Gambling for Dummies, Florida for Dummies, and Divorce for Dummies all seem oddly redundant to me.
Other titles seem like they should be leaflets rather than books. Migranes for Dummies, Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies, Running for Dummies - why does the term dummy even apply here?
Some For Dummies titles seem flat out odd to me. Witness the strangeness of Success for Dummies (forward by George Bush?), Training for Dummies (how do you train dummies?), Singing for Dummies (I'm a little tea pot?), Filmmaking for Dummies (people need to stop reading this one), and Beekeeping for Dummies (ow! ow! ow! ow!).
Dummies books that I want to see: Car Jacking for Dummies and Running for President for Dummies (John Kerry should get on that one). Any other suggestions?
