I've worked for tobacco companies. The thing I noticed...tobacco executives don't smoke. Why? I think it's because, like the rest of us, they're afraid to die. They just have better information about what smoking actually does to the human animal. Like other animals, though, we just have to have our noses rubbed in the bad bad facts before they start to sink in.
So that's what we're going to have to do...rub people's noses in it.
Britain is among the first countries to really realize this. In that country, cigarette packs will be required next year to display graphic images of diseased organs (like the one above) in a bid to scare smokers into snuffing out their butts, the government announced Wednesday. They are the first EU countries to go this far.
Images printed on cigarette packs will include an unhealthy lung, a chest cut open for heart surgery and a large tumor on a man's neck. In all, Britain chose 15 images to print on the packs.
Who knows. That could work.
Side note: Did you know that if you take a cigarette pack apart (unglue it) and remove a couple of flaps it is the shape of a coffin. True. Do it yourself.
