The Incident: As President Obama gave his speech to Congress Wednesday, a South Carolina Republican named Joe Wilson interrupted the popular President by shouting, "You Lie!" His unplanned and, apparently, unpopular outburst was an attempt to negate the President's claim that new health care benefits, "would not apply to those who are here illegally."
The Truth: According to the Associated Press, the President was in fact not lying. The bill in question would not apply to illegal immigrants. However the bill does not explicitly say how the government would ensure that only American's would get the coverage. Basically, Joe Wilson was lying by calling Obama a liar. Few Republicans will realize this, however, since they don't read and their radio programs don't cover things like the truth.
The Lesson: It's important to speak truth to power. Had Obama been lying, we should have applauded Joe Wilson for calling the lair out, right there in front of the world. That hypothetical Joe Wilson is a hero and a patriot. It would have been great to have those kinds of people on the Democratic site during those eight years (2000-2008) when we did have a President who lied in every third sentence. It would have been appropriate, in that case, to even throw an occasional shoe in disgust. Or a pump, NANCY.
Unfortunately for Joe Wilson, Obama was not lying. Joe was simply high on whiskey and insurance lobby contributions and said what he thought needed to be said in order to preserve a lie that he has probably been spreading. Joe Wilson is just another in a long stream of big fat corrupt Republican idiots.
UPDATE: Rob Miller, a Democrat and Marine Corps veteran, who was planning to run against Wilson in 2010, raised more than $50,000 for his campaign within just a few hours after Wilson's outburst. News reports also indicate that Joe's comment is helping to unite people around the healthcare reform cause. Thanks Joe. Next drink's on me.
